Thinking someone is from Mexico because they speak Spanish can be embarrassing. English-speaking Canadians don’t like being mistaken for Americans, but it happens all the time. French Canadians will do their best to correct people who think they are French. People from a country in Asia are also not happy when they are identified as Asian or other countries. If you mix up the Greeks and the Turks, or the Israelis and the Palestinians, it could lead to conflict. There’s nothing wrong with a possible gaffe or faux pas like this, and you have to be careful.
